The plexiglass case is hinged so that a watch can be inserted and then closed. Once closed, it slides into a slot of the tuning fork portion to lock it in place. The plexiglass hinges on this example do not hold the case together, but once the halves are slid into the metal fork they are held securely in place. Most have damage to the hinges, but it's really a non issue since the fork locks
